Spinal Decompression or Chiropractic?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing chiropractic and spinal decompression services in San Francisco for over 20 years in the Financial District.

Often times patients present to our clinic with back or neck pain related to a herniated disc and say they are interested in nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 or DRX9000c.

This is great, but it may not make the most sense. The reason I say this is that pinched nerves due to bulging or herniated discs respond favorably to conventional chiropractic care, which is cheaper and less of a time commitment than disc decompression.

Sure, a certain percentage of herniated disc patients will not respond to chiropractic and will end up on the decompression machine…but we find it works best when we try chiropractic first.

Some patients do not want to try chiropractic for various reasons and we will honor their wishes and initiate decompression. Some patients have already tried chiropractic without favorable results so we go right to decompression. And sometimes we do both chiropractic and decompression together.

All cases are different. When you have as much experience as we do treating lumbar and cervical disc herniations non-surgically, you get good at mixing and matching therapies. We also incorporate acupuncture, physical therapy, and deep tissue laser as needed into the mix and the results are outstanding.

So, if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc and are wondering if you should try chiropractic or spinal decompression, why not go to a chiropractor that does both and has lots of experience. Chances are you will be glad you did 🙂

Spinal Decompression for an L5 Herniated Disc

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. Currently, we use a combination of chiropractic adjustments (if tolerated), nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000, deep tissue laser therapy, core exercises, and lots of TLC.

The L5 spinal disc is in between the L5 lumbar vertebrae and Sacrum. It is the last vertebral disc in the spine and is the most common lumbar disc to herniate and require back surgery.

The L5 lumbar disc is the disc that we apply nonsurgical spinal decompression to most often…and with great success. Even if there are other bulges or herniations in the spine we always target L5-S1 first as many of the other herniations will correct themselves if the primary L5 disc heals and is re-positioned.

Spinal decompression is able to achieve favorable outcomes in most herniated disc patients by doing the following (the machine targets a specific spinal disc level such as L5 by adjusting the angle of pull):

  1. Elongates the spine.
  2. Enlarges the disc space.
  3. Re-hydrated the injured disc.
  4. Re-positions the herniated disc material off the nerves.
  5. Strengthens the spinal ligaments and muscles.
  6. Makes the spine more flexible and “life is motion”.

Spinal decompression patients must first qualify medically for DRX9000 treatment. If you have had fusion surgery or have scoliosis or severe osteoporosis (and other contraindications) you may not qualify. Your doctor will make this determination.

The best thing to do if you have an L5 disc herniation or herniated or bulging disc anywhere else in the low back or neck, is to find a spinal decompression center close to you and see if you qualify for decompression therapy. I would do this before you consider back surgery because you may not need to have it.

To find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation and tour of the DRX9000.

Spinal Decompression for Sciatica

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been providing treatment for Sciatica in San Francisco for over 20 years now. The primary causes of sciatica are bulging and herniated lumbar discs. During this time we have mostly used chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, deep tissue laser, and custom exercises.

About 8 years ago we began to incorporate spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is a machine that is designed and built to provide nonsurgical relief from neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging lumbar discs, degenerative disc disease, facet syndrome, and spinal stenosis.

The results have been outstanding.

We also provide cervical decompression therapy with the DRX9000c.

Often times, sciatica patients will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, cortisone, or pain medication. The sciatica symptoms resulting from the herniated discs can cause severe back pain and disability. Some patient are almost to sore and sensitive to even touch.

This is when spinal decompression makes the most amount of sense. Patients can be too sore to have chiropractic or physical therapy but they can handle decompression therapy. Typically, after  several sessions the inflammation starts to subside and the sciatica symptoms begin to abate….which is very nice.

Spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 takes about an hour for each session. The average sciatica patient requires about 2o sessions to achieve a favorable outcome.

We incorporate muscle stimulation, ice, exercise, and some chiropractic if indicated and tolerated. We will even apply deep tissue laser and advanced soft tissue methods such as ART and Graston as needed. The treatment is very comprehensive.

Not everyone qualifies for spinal decompression. If you have advanced spinal degeneration or osteoporosis, a previous spinal fusion, severe scoliosis, aortic aneurism, multiple sclerosis, to name a few, you may not qualify.

If you are interested in finding out if you are a candidate for nonsurgical spinal decompression at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center, please call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Considering Spinal Decompression?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. For the past 8 years we have included nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix.

Prior to spinal decompression therapy we would be unable to help certain herniated disc patients. After-all…chiropractic, which is a wonderful form of treatment for most cases, just can’t help certain disc patients. My guess is that up to 20% of the patients that suffer with a herniated or bulging cervical or lumbar disc, simply will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, medications, acupuncture, or exercise. They need something more.

Before spinal decompression we would refer most of these patients for back or neck surgery consultations. Some would have surgery, but most would just live with the pain. These are the first patients we treated when we purchased our first DRX9000 8 years ago.

Now things are different. The DRX9000 becomes our “next step” if chiropractic fails to deliver results with herniated and bulging disc patients. We also have a DRX9000c to treat cervical disc herniations.

Sometimes the DRX9000 or DRX9000c can actually help make chiropractic adjustments work. The spinal decompression process is able to reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms , which allow a patient to tolerate chiropractic. And the combination of chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression can be much more powerful than either one alone.

Don’t get me wrong…spinal decompression IS NOT a magic wand. What it is is the most advanced form of nonsurgical treatment in the marketplace today for neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.

Does spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 work every time?

NO…nothing does.  Just most of the time.

But here’s the deal. Spinal decompression is very safe. If it does not help you are still whole and can explore other treatment options. If you have fusion surgery you cannot UN-do it. You will be forever disqualified from ever trying spinal decompression.

TIP: Try spinal decompression first…you can always have surgery!

Lumbar Disc Bulge Treatment With Spinal Decompression

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Bulging Lumbar Discs

We have been providing low back pain treatment in San Francisco for over 20 years now. One of the more common conditions we treat is Lumbar Disc Bulge.

This is where the center of the disc (Nucleus Pulposus) has not yet herniated, but is still bulging through the outer containment walls of the disc (Anulus Fibrosis) and is causing nerve pressure…often times on the lumbar nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This can lead to sciatica (leg pain) as well as low back pain and dysfunction of varying degrees.

Bulging discs will often times become full blown disc herniations if left untreated.

Spinal Decompression machines are designed and built to reduce disc bulges and disc herniations. They do this by enlarging the disc space, stretching the spinal ligaments, elongating the spine, re-establishing nutrient exchange between the disc and blood stream, and creating a negative pressure in the disc.

The negative pressure pulls the bulging disc fragments, or herniated disc fragments back to the center of the disc where they belong and off of the spinal cord and nerves.

It really is quite amazing…but that’s how it works.

Does it work every single time? NO…just most of the time.

At our Spinal Decompression Clinic in San Francisco, we only accept cases that have a high probability of success. And the patient must be willing to do their part. The treatment protocol is for 20 hour long sessions over 4-6 weeks. There is quite a bit of home care also in the form of exercises, dietary recommendations, hydration, and do’s and dont’s.

The bulging disc patients that get the most from spinal decompression therapy, do their part, keep their appointments, and have a positive attitude about the treatment process…because it is a process.

Lumbar disc bulges can cause severe pain and loss of function…and often times nothing will help as far as medical care or even chiropractic or physical therapy. This is when spinal decompression makes the most sense.

So…if you have been diagnosed with a bulging lumbar disc or herniated disc, and feel you have no where to turn…disc decompression with a machine like the DRX9000 just might be a logical next step.

To find out if you are a candidate for the DRX9000 at our Spinal Decompression Center in San Francisco, call 415-392-2225 and ask for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression with the DRX9000 in San Francisco

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been treating low back pain in San Francisco for over 20 years…in the SF Financial District. Our newest clinic is located at the landmark Embarcadero Center.

About 8 years ago we added spinal decompression with the DRX9000 to our treatment protocols for herniated and bulging lumbar discs. The results have been outstanding.

A typical spinal decompression patient will have already been diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc and have MRI films. It’s also not unusual for our spinal decompression doctors to suspect a herniated disc and refer out for MRI. There is a diagnostic center right across the street from our spinal decompression clinic.

More often than not, the patient has already explored other treatment options such as cortisone, physical therapy, acupuncture, and pain medications…even chiropractic care.

As long as there are no contraindications such as previous fusion surgeries in the back, aortic aneurism, advanced osteoporosis, advanced spinal degeneration, MS and more…we are able to move forward with the DRX9000.

How many visits we recommend and what we decide to do along with the spinal decompression therapy is determined case by case.

The typical spinal decompression will consist of treatment on the DRX9000 for 30 minutes. 10 minutes of muscle stimulation to teach the spinal muscles to work with the spine in the new position, and 10 minutes of ice to reduce inflammation and soreness from the treatment.

YES…the treatment itself can make you a little sore…after-all it’s physical.

We have you wear a back support throughout the day and recommend that you ice every few hours for the first week or so.

The hour long treatments are usually performed 20-26 times over the course of 2 months. Some patients achieve complete resolution of pain and symptoms…some partial…and everything in between. It’s rare when there is no improvement. Most herniated disc patients are very satisfied with the treatment outcomes.

Our spinal decompression doctors have a lot of experience…and there is an art to setting someone up on the machine and fitting them for the harness that is worn during decompression therapy. And knowing when to increase the tension or lower it. Or when to start exercises…and what exercises will work best.

We also incorporate deep tissue laser therapy, massage, and gentle chiropractic adjustments into the process when indicated…knowing when is key.

So that’s it.

If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for care at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Spinal Decompression and Deep Tissue Laser Therapy for Herniated Discs

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for 20 years now. About 7 years ago we began to incorporate nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix. A few years later we added cold laser therapy, and more recently, Class IV Deep Tissue Laser Therapy.

Both spinal decompression and deep tissue laser therapy are considered major advancements in the nonsurgical treatment of herniated and bulging discs. We often use both together to achieve favorable outcomes…even with the most difficult of cases.

Classic herniated disc symptoms such as sciatica, low back pain, leg pain, numbness and tingling, leg weakness, arm pain, loss of grip strength, neck pain, and numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, all, more often than not,  respond favorably to decompression therapy and therapeutic pain laser or both.

The spinal decompression we use to treat disc herniations in the neck is the DRX9000c. It is actually connected to the DRX9000. The deep tissue laser we use is the LiteCure LCT-1000. A state-of-the-art medical device that is taking the world by storm.

The beauty of these technologies is they can be used on most people. They are very gentle and safe. Even when a patient is unable to handle exercise, chiropractic, or physical therapy…they can always handle laser, and often handle spinal decompression.

What this does is enable us to initiate treatment right away so we can start lowering pain and inflammation levels…often times when nothing is working…even pain medications.

Spinal decompression and deep tissue therapeutic laser with the LCT-1000 may just be the answer you are looking for.

If you live or work near downtown San Francisco you can visit us. If you don’t, I recommend you do a Google search for DRX9000, DRX9000c (if cervical) and LiteCure Deep Tissue Laser, in your area. Example “DRX9000 San Francisco”.

If you would like a complimentary consultation at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…please call 415-392-2225 and mention this blog post.

Is Spinal Decompression Painful?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been offering spinal decompression services in San Francisco for about 8 years now. During this time we have performed over 15,000 spinal decompression treatments to the neck and low back…so we have a nice sampling to draw certain conclusions from.

One of the first things many potential spinal decompression patients ask is “does spinal decompression hurt?”…and you can’ really blame them…most are already in a lot of pain and really don’t want to have the injured spinal disc pulled on if it is going to hurt.

Well…the good news is that decompression therapy with machines like the DRX9000 are designed and built for maximum patient comfort. In fact…most people fall asleep during the spinal decompression treatments, which last about 30 minutes.

So…to directly answer the question “Is spinal decompression painful?”

I would say NO!…most of the time.

Sure…there are situations where people get sore…sometimes real sore…but “real sore” is rare.  As spinal decompression doctors we expect that patients will get sore…after-all, the treatment is physical. Because of this we use muscle stimulation and ice right after the decompression treatments to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms. We also instruct the patients on how to apply ice throughout the day.

We have real specific do’s and dont’s that allow for maximum healing.

And when patients do get sore…it’s usually nothing more than the soreness you would get if you did a new exercise. Because in actuality, it’s very similar. Part of the soreness some people get after decompression is because the muscle are now working with the spine and disc in a new position…so they have to work a little different…because of this they can get sore. Ice reduces the likelihood of the soreness interfering with the treatment.

Bottom Line: Most herniated disc patients look forward to their spinal decompression therapy. The listen to music, sleep, relax, and generally get better.

So there you go. Don’t let the possibility of soreness from decompression therapy stop you from doing it. Because chances are, it will be a non event.

Does Insurance Cover Spinal Decompression?

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompresion

We have been providing Spinal Decompression in San Francisco for about 6 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000 lumbar decompression system. We also have a DRX9000c which treats herniated discs in the neck.

One of the most common questions spinal decompression candidates want to know is:

Will My Insurance Cover Spinal Decompression?

Unfortunately, at least in California, the answer is NO!

However, most insurance WILL cover some of the ancillary services like exams, re-exams, ice, heat, muscle stimulation, back supports, exercises, massage, and home care/ergonomic instruction. How much just depends on the individual plan and medical necessity.

So sure…it’s kind of a bummer that spinal decompression is not a covered expense because it is still considered “experimental”…but all is not lost.

If you want to find out what your insurance covers I recommend having a spinal decompression clinic check your benefits for you.

If you live or work in the SF Bay Area and would like our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center to check your benefits…you can simply fill out our “secure” online insurance benefits check form and we will get back with you.
