Do Spinal Decompression Results Last?

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

We have been providing spinal decompression therapy in downtown San Francisco for 9 years now. During this time we have helped thousands of patients with cervical and lumbar disc herniations, bulging discs, and related disorders, return to more normal lives.

Because we have treated so many cases over an extended period of time, we know that for the most part, spinal decompression results are long lasting.

Depending on the nature and severity of the individual neck or back pain patient’s condition when we started, their overall health and lifestyle, occupation, and initial treatment outcome, we may recommend ongoing maintenance care to improve the odds of the results lasting. Most decompression patients are happy to do this if it means the results will last longer, which they will.

The treatment frequency for maintenance care on the DRX9000 is anywhere from 2 times per month in the beginning to once every couple of months ongoing. In addition, there are exercises, stretches, home care, and nutritional recommendations to help patients maintain results.

Some patients choose to move into chiropractic, yoga, Pilates, or physical therapy for ongoing support. This is good, but none of these do what the spinal decompression machine can do. If you really want the decompression results to last you should probably continue with some sort of maintenance care. You can play around with the frequency until you find an interval that works best for you. Of course, we help you with this process.

For those that do not do maintenance, the results seem to hold up well…just not as good. So, to get the most out of your decompression, YES, we recommend some sort of maintenance plan, and we will make it affordable for you.

The time to start spinal decompression is always NOW!

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

We have been offering spinal decompression therapy in San Francisco for over 8 years now. During this time we have performed over 15,000 spinal decompression sessions…so we know a little bit about what works.

One thing we have figured out is that there will never be a perfect time to start. There will always be vacations, prior commitments, kids, work, things you need to start and things you need to finish…life!

Sure, DRX9000 decompression therapy is a commitment…it’s 20 one hour sessions done in 6-8 weeks or more. But heck…the reason you are considering doing it is because low back pain, sciatica, or neck pain is interfering with your life. You have been diagnosed with some sort of neurovascular compression syndrome such as a herniated or bulging disc in the cervical or lumbar spine.  So whatever you are doing you are most likely doing it in pain and are unable to fully enjoy what life has to offer.

This is why i say that the time to start spinal decompression is always NOW.

Why not start the process of repairing your back now so you can get your life back?

At our spinal decompression center in San Francisco we try to make the process as easy as possible. We reserve the DRX9000 for you so there is no waiting. We can perform the entire treatment in around 50 minutes so you do not get trapped for hours like other clinics. And…we can work with your busy schedule to get you started even if it means you can only do a few sessions per week. It can be easy to start…really.

We have found that those that make decompression happen seem to get the best results. They are mentally prepared for a favorable outcome…they expect it. They are taking charge and not letting the normal stresses of life interfere with their decision. And we are right there with them making sure the process is a smooth ride.

Hey…the Holidays are a perfect time to start disc decompression therapy. Things slow down, we have space on the decompression machine, and it’s a great way to power into the New Year.

Anyway…we hope you are enjoying the season and we look forward to seeing you soon 🙂

Considering Spinal Decompression?

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for over 20 years now. For the past 8 years we have included nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000 into the mix.

Prior to spinal decompression therapy we would be unable to help certain herniated disc patients. After-all…chiropractic, which is a wonderful form of treatment for most cases, just can’t help certain disc patients. My guess is that up to 20% of the patients that suffer with a herniated or bulging cervical or lumbar disc, simply will not respond to chiropractic care, physical therapy, medications, acupuncture, or exercise. They need something more.

Before spinal decompression we would refer most of these patients for back or neck surgery consultations. Some would have surgery, but most would just live with the pain. These are the first patients we treated when we purchased our first DRX9000 8 years ago.

Now things are different. The DRX9000 becomes our “next step” if chiropractic fails to deliver results with herniated and bulging disc patients. We also have a DRX9000c to treat cervical disc herniations.

Sometimes the DRX9000 or DRX9000c can actually help make chiropractic adjustments work. The spinal decompression process is able to reduce inflammation, pain, and muscle spasms , which allow a patient to tolerate chiropractic. And the combination of chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression can be much more powerful than either one alone.

Don’t get me wrong…spinal decompression IS NOT a magic wand. What it is is the most advanced form of nonsurgical treatment in the marketplace today for neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndrome, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease.

Does spinal decompression therapy with the DRX9000 work every time?

NO…nothing does.  Just most of the time.

But here’s the deal. Spinal decompression is very safe. If it does not help you are still whole and can explore other treatment options. If you have fusion surgery you cannot UN-do it. You will be forever disqualified from ever trying spinal decompression.

TIP: Try spinal decompression first…you can always have surgery!

Lumbar Disc Bulge Treatment With Spinal Decompression

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Bulging Lumbar Discs

We have been providing low back pain treatment in San Francisco for over 20 years now. One of the more common conditions we treat is Lumbar Disc Bulge.

This is where the center of the disc (Nucleus Pulposus) has not yet herniated, but is still bulging through the outer containment walls of the disc (Anulus Fibrosis) and is causing nerve pressure…often times on the lumbar nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This can lead to sciatica (leg pain) as well as low back pain and dysfunction of varying degrees.

Bulging discs will often times become full blown disc herniations if left untreated.

Spinal Decompression machines are designed and built to reduce disc bulges and disc herniations. They do this by enlarging the disc space, stretching the spinal ligaments, elongating the spine, re-establishing nutrient exchange between the disc and blood stream, and creating a negative pressure in the disc.

The negative pressure pulls the bulging disc fragments, or herniated disc fragments back to the center of the disc where they belong and off of the spinal cord and nerves.

It really is quite amazing…but that’s how it works.

Does it work every single time? NO…just most of the time.

At our Spinal Decompression Clinic in San Francisco, we only accept cases that have a high probability of success. And the patient must be willing to do their part. The treatment protocol is for 20 hour long sessions over 4-6 weeks. There is quite a bit of home care also in the form of exercises, dietary recommendations, hydration, and do’s and dont’s.

The bulging disc patients that get the most from spinal decompression therapy, do their part, keep their appointments, and have a positive attitude about the treatment process…because it is a process.

Lumbar disc bulges can cause severe pain and loss of function…and often times nothing will help as far as medical care or even chiropractic or physical therapy. This is when spinal decompression makes the most sense.

So…if you have been diagnosed with a bulging lumbar disc or herniated disc, and feel you have no where to turn…disc decompression with a machine like the DRX9000 just might be a logical next step.

How do I know if I Qualify for Spinal Decompression?

We have been providing spinal decompression services in downtown San Francisco for 8 years now. The machine we use is the DRX9000.

drx9000 therapy san francisco, 94111
DRX9000 Lumbar Decompression

Nonsurgical spinal decompression is a machine that is designed an built to treat neurovascular compression syndromes such as herniated and bulging discs, spinal stenosis, disc degeneration, and facet syndrome.

Not everyone qualifies medically for spinal decompression therapy…and here are some of the contraindications and exclusions:

  • Aortic Aneurism
  • Surgical Fusion (cement, wires, mesh, hardware)
  • Unstable Spondylolithesis (usually Grade II and above)
  • Advanced Osteoporosis
  • Moderate to Severe Congenital Scoliosis
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Bone or muscle tumors
  • Severe Spinal Degeneration

Please note: Your spinal decompression doctor will have to make the decision of whether or not you are a good candidate for spinal decompression at their clinic.

The best thing to do is research spinal decompression doctors in your area online and meet with them face to face with your medical records. You can both decide together if spinal decompression therapy makes sense for you.

To schedule an appointment with one of our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Doctors, call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Can Spinal Decompression Help a Pinched Nerve?

herniated disc treatment in San Francisco
Pinched Nerve: Herniated Lumbar Disc

A Pinched Nerve is mostly the result of a herniated or bulging disc in the neck or low back. Nerves can also be pinched or irritated by acute muscle spasms secondary to acute trauma or chronic overuse. Vertebral Subluxations of the spine can also result in inflammation and muscle spasms that can irritate nerves directly or indirectly (chemical irritation) resulting in symptoms such as sciatica.

Spinal decompression with machines such as the DRX9000 are considered by many to be the gold standard for the nonsurgical treatment of cervical and lumbar disc herniations and bulges.

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Chronic Back Pain

Nonsurgical spinal decompression machines are able to isolate on a specific spinal disc, say L5-S1 and repair the disc to the extent it is possible. Sometimes the disc is injured beyond repair…but this is the exception and not the rule.

The DRX9000 elongates the spine, enlarges the disc space, re-hydrates the disc, strengthens the spinal ligaments, re-positions the disc, and helps align the spine.

Over the course of say 6-8 weeks or 20-26 sessions, partial healing to complete healing takes place. And yes…occasionally spinal decompression fails to deliver. It’s not perfect…nothing is.

But here’s the deal…even if decompression therapy does not achieve a favorable outcome for you, you are still whole and able to pursue other treatment options. Surgery on the other hand is mostly a permanent change that cannot be undone. And once you have a fusion surgery you are forever disqualified from ever trying disc decompression with the DRX9000.

So…why not consider spinal decompression first…you can always have surgery?

If you a have been diagnosed with a pinched nerve secondary to a cervical or lumbar disc herniation you may be a candidate for spinal decompression.

All Spinal Decompression Doctors Are Not The Same

We have been providing nonsurgical treatment for herniated and bulging discs in San Francisco for about 20 years now in the SF Financial District.

drx9000 in san francisco
Spinal Decompression Therapy with DRX9000

We were the first to offer DRX9000 and DRX9000c spinal decompression in San Francisco. Since then, many have purchased spinal decompression machines and claim to be experts in the nonsurgical treatment of herniated and bulging discs. And some of them are. But most are not.

In my opinion, most doctors that offer spinal decompression services lean too much on the machine…as if it were a magic wand. Sure, the spinal decompression machine is the meat and potatoes of a spinal decompression treatment program…but there is a lot more to it.

In my experience…and I have personally helped thousands of chronic and severe back and neck pain patients return to more normal lives, the spinal decompression treatment must address physical, mental, and chemical stresses that may be interfering with the patients health.

If a spinal decompression doctor does not address these areas, the results will not be as good. Some patients are under a tremendous amount of mental stress either at work or at home. This triggers the release of the stress hormone Cortisol which is pro-inflammatory. It is very hard to repair a herniated disc with chronic stress.

Some herniated disc patients have very poor diets. They eat mostly processed foods and animal products which are also pro-inflammatory and can interfere with spinal decompression treatment.  I prefer a Plant Based Diet and my best resource is Dr. John McDougall, MD.

And there is an art to setting up herniated disc patients on the DRX9000 or other spinal decompression systems. You get better and better the more back and neck pain patients you treat.

There is also an exercise component to decompression therapy. Start too soon and you set the patient back. Start too late and you slow down the process. And you have to know which exercises will work best for each patient…everyone is different.

And there is even more to it than this. So don’t just think because a doctor has a spinal decompression machine like a DRX9000 that the treatment will be the same as it will be somewhere else. Do some research. Ask if they have patients you can talk to. Ask for an office tour or maybe a trial session to see how it feels. Do your homework.

Herniated Disc? What happens if you do nothing?

We have been providing treatment for herniated discs in San Francisco for about 20 years now. During this time we have learned much. About 7 years ago we added nonsurgical spinal decompression to our treatment protocols. A while later deep tissue laser.

herniated disc treatment san francisco
Herniated Disc Treatment

So what happens if you are diagnosed with a herniated disc and you take no action?

It just depends.

Chances are if you have been diagnosed with a herniated disc you had an MRI…which is the “gold standard” diagnostic tool when it comes to confirming the presence of disc herniations or disc bulges.

And if you had an MRI you are most likely symptomatic…meaning you have symptoms such as sciatica from a lumbar disc herniation, or radiating arm pain from a cervical disc herniation.

So now your medical doctor tells you YES…you do in fact have a disc herniation in your lumbar spine at L5 and he wants to do surgery to remove it. WOW…what now?

Well…if it were me I certainly would not agree to low back surgery right off the bat. I would explore nonsurgical options such as nonsurgical spinal decompression with the DRX9000.

I would also consider major lifestyle modifications such as weight loss, giving up all bad habits such as smoking, drugs, drinking (if excessive) and anything else I was doing that was bad. I would seriously consider adopting a plant based diet such as the McDougall Program to reduce inflammation and help the disc to heal. I would go 100% clean and try to work it that way.

But that’s me…and most are not willing to do this. Plus, it might not work for you. A certain percentage of cervical and lumbar disc herniations simply are stuck on nerves in a way that requires that they be physically removed and lifestyle changes will do nothing for them other than provide a healthier context improved over-all health.

If you do nothing you just keep getting worse and the herniated disc will become more difficult to treat the longer you let it go. And your life will become even more miserable.

drx9000 in san francisco
Lumbar Decompression For Chronic Back Pain

Or, you can make all the lifestyle changes (or not) and try nonsurgical spinal decompression on a machine like the DRX9000. The DRX9000 is designed and built to actually isolate on a herniated disc and physically remove it from the spinal nerve it is irritating. It does this by creating a negative pressure, elongating the spine, enlarging the disc space, re-positioning the disc back where it belongs. YES it really does do this.

So sure…you can jump right into neck or back surgery and risk all kinds of bad stuff. You can do nothing and risk the problem getting worse and becoming more difficult to treat. Or you can try spinal decompression therapy and see if you can get your life back…naturally.

Sure, there’s a chance disc decompression will not help you…but success rates are high…so it’s a chance worth taking 🙂

Scoliosis and Spinal Decompression

scoliosis treatment san franciscoWe have been providing Spinal Decompression Therapy in San Francisco for over 6 years now, and the results have been outstanding. Some low back pain patients present with  scoliosis and have special concerns so we thought we would address some of them here.

Scoliosis is a term used to describe a curvature of the spine that is not “normal.”  The normal curves of the spine include an inward curve in the low back and neck and an outward curve in the mid-back when looking at the person from the side (“sagittal plane”).  However, there should NOT be any curves when looking at a person from the front or back (the frontal plane), the spine should be straight. When there is a curve in the frontal plane, this is called scoliosis and it’s usually either a singe curve, shaped like the letter “C” or, a double (or more) curve, shaped like the letter “S”. Though there is a diagnostic code specific for scoliosis, it is not in itself a disease or a diagnosis and frequently, there are no or at worst, minimal symptoms associated with it. For this reason, most of the time, scoliosis is not noticed until the curve progresses significantly and a friend or family member makes a comment about it or a school screening picks it up.

The most common spinal location for scoliosis to develop is in the middle to upper back (called the thoracic spine) but it can also be located at the junction between the mid back and low back, as well as in the low back only or more rarely, in the neck only. Since there are rarely symptoms associated with scoliosis, the way it’s found is by observing one or more of the following:

  • One shoulder is higher than the other
  • One shoulder blade sticks out more than the other
  • One side of the rib cage appears higher than the other (called a “rib hump”)
  • One hip appears higher or more prominent than the other
  • The waist appears uneven
  • The body tilts to one side
  • One leg may appear or actually be shorter than the other

The use of x-ray usually is appropriate to confirm the diagnosis, to measure the amount of curve, which can then be used for future comparison, and to rule out a possible unusual cause of scoliosis. Rarely is an MRI required – only in cases where neurological signs and symptoms exist and, in younger children (ages 8-11 years old) as scoliosis almost always occurs during the puberty timeframe when hormonal systems are kicking in, such as ages 12-14. When scoliosis occurs at ages less than 11, when there are neurological changes (reflex, muscle strength and/or sensory functions), and/or when the mid-back/thoracic curve bends to the left (as it almost always curves to the right), an MRI is appropriate to rule out spinal cord pressure.

The decision to treat or not to treat is dependent on 2 factors: 1) The “skeletal maturity of the patient” (how much growing is left for the person) and, 2) The degree of the curve. In general, the bigger the curve and the younger the patient, the greater the chance for curve progression or worsening.  With that said, curves less 10° reportedly don’t require treatment but over 20° should be watched at 4-6 month intervals. If a curve progresses >5° and/or when the curve is >30° in an adolescent, the person should be treated – most doctors would utilize a back brace. Chiropractors can offer additional care by applying spinal adjustments, reducing leg length deficiencies when a compensatory lumbar/low back curve is present and by offering scoliosis-specific exercises.

We realize you have a choice in who you choose to provide your healthcare services.  If you, a friend or family member requires care for low back pain, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.

As long as the scoliosis is mild we can still perform spinal decompression treatment. If the scoliosis is progressive and moderate to severe, spinal decompression does not make sense and is contraindicated.

If you would like to find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center, call 415-392-2225. mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.

Does Spinal Decompression Work?

Many herniated disc patients are confused as to why their orthopedic surgeons do not offer spinal decompression therapy…or why they do not recommend it. After-all, nonsurgical spinal decompression with machines like the DRX9000 is now the new gold standard for nonsurgical treatment for herniated and bulging discs.

decompression therapy san francisco
Lumbar decompression with the DRX9000

I’m not sure what to say because our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center gets referrals all the time from medical doctors…and we have also treated many medical doctors, nurses, and medical personnel on the DRX9000. I guess it just depends who your doctor is and how up to date they are with medical technology…and how open minded they are.

There are are close minded people in every profession. Our spinal decompression doctors go out of their way to educate other health care providers on the benefits of cervical and lumbar disc decompression. We also co-manage herniated disc patients with medical doctors. This way the patient gets the best of both worlds.

Some doctors will not recommend treatment unless there is substantial research to document it’s efficacy. Unfortunately, since spinal decompression is relatively new (5-10 years) there are no double blind studies yet…which is why insurance companies will not pay for it.

However, there are hundreds of thousands of happy spinal decompression patients that swear disc decompression gave them their life back…and they could care less if there are any double blind studies.

Spinal decompression with the DRX9000 (the machine we use) is also very safe. Permanent bodily harm is something that pretty much does not happen. Soreness is common…like the soreness you get from exercise…but it’s manageable.

So does spinal decompression work?

YES

Does it work for everyone and will it work for me?

Well…for sure it does not work for everyone. First you have to be cleared for spinal decompression. Not all herniated disc patients qualify. Once you qualify you have to keep all your appointments, do your home care, wear your back brace, and adhere to the treatment protocol. If you do…chances are very good for a favorable outcome.

At our spinal decompression clinic we manage expectations. Some patients completely get better…some just become a lot better than they were…and everything in between. It’s rare when a patient does not respond at all…but it does happen.

Since there is no surgery…there is no harm done if decompression fails to deliver results. The only damage is to your pocket book. It’s a risk worth taking.

To find out if you are a candidate for disc decompression with the DRX9000 at our San Francisco Spinal Decompression Center…call 415-392-2225. Mention this blog post for a complimentary consultation.
